Panzer Dragoon Saga: An RPG Ahead of Its Time In hindsight, there was probably no amount of money could have accomplished that goal, but Panzer Dragoon Saga, the game that Sega ultimately produced, is arguably better than any Final Fantasy game of the era, even if it only saw a fraction of that series’ sales. A sequel, Panzer Dragon II Zwei was quickly greenlit, and even better received upon its release in 1996.īut as Zwei entered development, Team Andromeda was given another directive from Sega: create a Panzer Dragoon RPG that could outsell Final Fantasy. While the gameplay was somewhat similar to Star Fox, the next-gen graphics of the time blew away Nintendo’s early attempts at 3D, and the mechanics and setting were just different enough for it to carve out its own identity. One launch game in particular, the rail shooter Panzer Dragoon, impressed gamers and critics alike with its rich 3D graphics, epic soundtrack, and post-apocalyptic fantasy setting. Though Sega itself was very publicly imploding at the time, the Saturn still managed to build a very respectable library of titles. When the Nintendo 64 hit shelves in 1996, that was essentially the final nail in the coffin for the Saturn in the West. But for now, simply knowing the game is on the way is great. The result was the Sony PlayStation immediately outselling the Saturn when it launched a few months later. Additionally, the first launched exclusively for a time on the Switch, and eventually came to other platforms, so that could happen again. What that means exactly in terms of timing is not yet known. The developer did not beat around the bush, by any means, and simply said "We're planning to release Panzer Dragoon 2 Zwei 2: Remake this year." That is thrilling news for fans of the game.

One fan responded by asking about the sequel to the game, and if it would also be receiving a remake. The original Panzer Dragoon: Remake is available on all major platforms, and the developer posted a tweet to celebrate this. While the original Panzer Dragoonwas eventually released on many different platforms, Panzer Dragoon 2 Zwei released in 1996 on the Sega Saturn and is very much trapped on that console. But the developers of the remake are not quite done, as they recently revealed that more remakes are on the way. Many fans have appreciated the return of this series, as the first launched back in 1995. Last year, Panzer Dragoon: Remake made its way to PS4, PC, and other platforms after originally being released on the Nintendo Switch in early 2020.
